QUEZON

The Philippine province of Quezon is situated in the Calabarzon area of Luzon. The provincial capital and most populated city is Lucena, a heavily urbanized city that is run independently of the province. Manuel L. Quezon, the president of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944, is credited with giving the province its name. Originally named Kalilayan when it was established in 1591, it changed its name to Tayabas by the 18th century until deciding on its current name in 1946. Another form of the province's official name, Quezon Province, is used to differentiate it from Quezon City.
