ILOCOS SUR

The Philippine province of Ilocos Sur, also known as the Province of Ilocos Sur (Ilocano: Probinsia ti Ilocos Sur; Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Ilocos Sur), is situated in the Ilocos Region of Luzon. The most populated city is Candon, and the capital, Vigan, is situated on the mouth of the Mestizo River. Ilocos Sur is bounded to the north by Abra and Ilocos Norte, to the east by Mountain Province, to the south by La Union and Benguet, and to the west by the South China Sea.

Juan de Salcedo, a Spanish conquistador, established Ilocos Sur in 1572. When the north (now Ilocos Norte) divided from the south (now Ilocos Sur), it was created. Parts of Abra and the upper portion of modern-day La were included at the time.
